Making is fun!

Masterclass Maker Education in Rotterdam

Last week at Dé Onderwijsdagen, #OWD2015 together with Wietse Bruggen, we held a Maker education class for a group of education experts. We had lots of fun, because making IS fun.

We only had 75 minutes, in a conference room, tables dragged in at the last minute. I brought my usual bags of cardboard and old plastic, the Design-a-Thon School Maker kits and some handy tools, such as glue guns.

So how do you know what to make?
To get the most out of our time together, I chose a new approach — at Design-a-Thon Schools we always work with a learning by design cycle (ontwerpend leren)- but you can’t possibly do all those steps in such a short time. So I brought a number of design sketches which children had made in earlier sessions.

The education experts happily grabbed their preferred invention sketch to work from. We had the ‘A riding park bench for grandmothers to do their shopping’, the ‘Happy chef to make meals’ and the 'Ultimate street cleaning robot' above.

Making is fun but needs structure too and space for the generation of ideas which in turn motivate the making. But that’s another blog post, for now we had FUN.

Thanks to Wietse of Kennisnet, and great to have @warempel @kunstjuf @4pip @kermisjuf @JufMaike @hetdigilab @_mike and more! #OWD2015
